Learn About The Risks Associated With A Chemical Peel For Men

Article by Gordon Hall

Dermatologists may recommend a chemical peel for men with wrinkles, age spots or other skin imperfections. While they might be effective and are advisable for the removal of precancerous growths, peels are risky when used for cosmetic purposes. This article looks at the risks.

All professional peels take time to heal. The amount of healing time depends on how many layers of skin are peeled away. People receiving the treatments typically must take several days off from work.

The peels designed for home use are relatively safe, but largely ineffective. Some people do experience burning redness and irritation, depending on the type of acids included in the product, on the concentration and on the length of time the acids are left on the skin.

Numerous treatments may be needed to achieve the desired results when mild acids are used, which is why doctors sometimes use the stronger acids. The cosmetic treatments are expensive and not covered by insurance.

Erythema, which is chronic redness, is one of the risks. Dermatologists rarely recommend a chemical peel for men who already have some chronic redness due to age, sun exposure, rosacea or other issues. The peels would only make the redness worse.

Pain and burning occur during treatment. The strongest of the peels, known as the phenol peels, require heavy sedation, because of the pain. The pain and burning may continue for many days, especially if a deep peeling is done.

Whiteheads sometimes appear on the treated areas for unknown reasons. The whiteheads are sometimes worse looking than the original problem.

Although peels are sometimes used to remove age spots, there is a risk of making the pigmentation darker. It is hard to determine how a person’s skin will react with the acid.

There are options to the chemical peel for men. There are creams that will fade age spots and even out pigmentation. There are effective anti-wrinkle creams. There are products that reduce sagging and cleansers that are beneficial for acne.

In fact, there is always some kind of alternative for the problem.

Often, the problem was caused by poor skincare routine. Simply improving the skincare routine may be all that is necessary to correct the problem. Just protecting the skin from the sun will take care of a lot of problems.

If you do choose to use a chemical peel for men, be sure to invest in some good aftercare products. In particular, you will need an effective moisturizer. Otherwise, dryness will become an issue.
